EDUCATION NEWS

  • Muncie-born Gregory Williams, a teacher and writer whose book Life on the Color Line won Book of the Year in 1995, died Aug. 12 in Valhalla, New York at age 81. He led both the University of Cincinnati and City College of New York—he is survived by his wife, four children, grandchildren, and siblings.  Star Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Muncie's Emily Kimbrough Historic District was named one of Indiana's 10 most endangered landmarks after plans for roundabouts at four intersections raised concerns about its historic and walkable character—bids for the project will be accepted in early 2027 with construction set to begin a few months later. City leaders and residents continue to review local traffic data to balance safety improvements with preserving the district’s heritage.  Star Press

  • Voters in Muncie can now cast their ballots for The Star Press 2025 IU Health Preseason Football Player of the Year poll, and the online vote—open until 11:59 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21—allows unlimited entries with winners announced online on Friday.  Star Press
  • USA TODAY Network Indiana released its high school football preseason poll as sportswriters ranked top teams in every class — defending state champion Brownsburg leads Class 6A and New Palestine tops Class 5A ahead of Week 1 games.  Star Press
  • Yorktown girls golf won the Delaware County Invitational at Muncie Elks Golf Club on Aug. 16 by posting a team score of 340—the best in over a decade. Freshman Lilly Duncan led the team with an 81 to earn low medalist honors as the girls claimed the county title for the first time since 2022.  Star Press
