- ➤ Ball State University trustees extended President Geoffrey S. Mearns' contract until June 30, 2029 after a May 1 board vote recognized his leadership on enrollment management and campus Village revitalization (a key part of the university's strategic initiative). Star Press
- ➤ Ball State University professor Adam Kuban was named Teacher of the Year by the Scripps Howard Fund on May 6. His community projects & hands-on teaching have given many students real-world journalism experience, earning him national recognition. Star Press
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Braun announced on May 6 that he extended suspensions on Indiana's gas sales and excise taxes, saving drivers 23 cents per gallon in April. Gas prices still exceed the national average but the relief may ease costs in the coming days. Star Press
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Nurses Appreciation Week continues this week as local restaurants and businesses offer discounts and freebies to honor nurses, following Nurses Appreciation Day on May 6. Offers require a valid staff ID and are available through May 12 (check individual venues for details). Star Press
- ➤ Indiana American Water switched to free chlorine on May 4 for eight weeks to improve water quality + address taste and odor concerns as crews begin hydrant flushing, and the water remains safe to drink with extra caution advised around working crews. Star Press
- ➤ The CDC warns locals who care for backyard poultry to wash their hands and avoid close contact as a multistate Salmonella outbreak — sickening 34 people from Feb. 26 to Mar. 31 — affects Indiana and other states. Residents should follow safety tips to reduce illness risk. Star Press
