- ➤ Jennifer Southerland, a cherished supporter of Delta athletics (Delta Eagle parent) and dedicated teacher, died unexpectedly on April 4 while riding her bike. A memorial scholarship fund was set up to help local college-bound athletes carry on her legacy. Star Press

- ➤ Ball State University will host a public beam signing from 4 to 6 p.m. on May 1 at Ashland Avenue and Martin Street—part of the Village revitalization project that will open a new Center for Innovation and Collaboration in Fall 2026 and bring together university resources with community and business partners. - ➤ Spotted lanternflies have been spotted in 17 states and may harm trees and crops in our area. The USDA advises residents to step on the adults and scrape off egg clusters into a zippered bag with hand sanitizer—then throw the bag away. Star Press
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Indiana lawmakers sent Senate Bill 289 to Gov. Braun on April 24 after passing it with votes of 64—26 in the House and 34—16 in the Senate. The bill bans actions in public schools and state agencies based on personal characteristics and allows lawsuits for actual damages only—following executive orders stopping DEI efforts, and the governor is expected to sign it soon. - ➤ Indiana lawmakers are wrapping up the legislative session today and will vote on a two-year state budget that includes a cigarette tax hike and universal school choice — Gov. Mike Braun has endorsed the plan. Lawmakers are also considering bills on anti-DEI language, a ban on marijuana advertising, and health care cost-cutting measures. Star Press
